My name is Harvey (Milk). I was known as a gay rights activist before and after my death by a gunshot wound. Here’s my main point. The human ego can help to introduce new ideas to the larger collection of human egos, helping wo wither away their rigidity and eventually helping people to open up to things like Christ awareness, Christ consciousness, and finally Christ manifestation.
The prejudice was and still is coming from religious tradition. The ideas about God and what it means to be make or female all stem from misunderstandings and fear. It is not an abomination for a man to lie with another man. Maybe the ones who were being referred to felt that way due to their upbringing and conditioning.
We are all talking about the power of superstition and myth to the human mind. People have the ability to expand their thinking. They already have. Not only about homosexuality but about a lot of things.
I never envisioned two men or two women being able to marry each other and create legally recognized families. We were fighting for the end of discrimination in employment and housing. The Briggs initiative sought to ban gay teachers, so it became a rallying cry for us.
I didn’t know anything about being able to live here with a different type of consciousness but I did know that we could do better. We could be more expansive and more inclusive. Now, I see that I did my part. I see the big picture now, which is all about freedom of expression and love.
